Phacoemulsification of Cataract with Intraocular Lens Implantation

Procedure Description:
Removal a cataract through a small incision with placement of a lens implant in order to restore vision that has been compromised by the cataract.

What To Expect:
This is an outpatient procedure and so most patients are home about an hour after surgery. Most of our cataract surgeries are performed at the HealthSouth Surgicenter in the Notre Dame Hills Medical complex on West Main. Operative time varies between 20 and 40 minutes with an average of 30 minutes. There is usually minimal pain or discomfort involved. The anesthetic technique used is both injection and in selected cases topical anesthetic drops only. Most patients recieve a patch and a shield on the which is removed the next morning in the office.

Preprocedure:
At the time of scheduling your surgery you will also be given a

Postprocedure:
You may experience a mild headache the day of your surgery. Whatever you usually take for mild pain such as aspirin or tylenol should give you relief. Anything more than mild pain is very unusual and should be reported to the doctors office at once. If you have a patch and shield keep them in place and don't allow them to become wet. Unless instructed otherwis by the surgeon you may resume normal physical activity except for heavy lifting(more than 25lbs.) or any jumping. If you have any doubts about a given activity ask the Surgeon if it will be ok. The patch will be removed in the office the day after surgery and you will be started on 2 different drops. Exact written instructions for their use will be given to you at that time. Usually your next appointment will be the folowing week. Any decrease in vision or pain should be reported immediately to the office.
